Featured Pet: Dodger Dog
Dodger Dog, one year old sterilized male Dalmatian needs a home with a big yard and a rough and tumble play buddy his size. Dodger weighs about 60 lbs, is in good health. He has all his shots, is licensed and micro chipped. Dodger loves going to the dog park near the Zoo and does really well with all dogs. He loves to run, play with dogs his size and wrestle playfully.
Dodger Dog found us. I was walking our two small terrier rescues, Mr.Donut and Yoonit, in Elysian Park right across from Dodger Stadium. He was running loose and joined us in our walk. We suspect he has been abused and was abandoned there as he was skin and bones, had no collar, license, or microchip. When we finished our walk he just sat next to us. I could not leave this gentle dog there to fend for himself so I slid my belt over his neck as a leash and led him along with our dogs to the car. He had probably never been in a car as he did not know how to get in and tipped over on every curve.
We kept him for a few days and posted signs for Dodger in the surrounding neighborhood near Dodger Stadium but no one called us, then turned him into the Northeast Shelter but there were no inquiries or interest in him there either. We could not let this gentle dog be destroyed so we adopted him and named him Dodger Dog.
We have never had a large dog as a pet. He is so gentle we took a chance. He rarely barks, he chose the back stoop to sleep at night. He sleeps most of the day. For a big dog he is perfect. Well, mostly. He does like to dig holes sometimes and he has bolted out of our yard on several occasions onto a busy street. The only way I caught him was to use Mr. Donut as a lure as Dodger loves him. As soon as he saw Mr. Donut, he came galloping back.
Our home is set up for our small dogs. They have a doggie door into the house and the small yard is perfect for them. Dodger is very gentle and submissive to our small terriers but one of them is very afraid of Dodger. Mr. Donut tries to play with Dodger but Dodger is too big and usually ends up making Mr. Donut yelp and retreat into the house. Yoonit, our other rescue was severely abused when we adopted her and this timid dog is afraid of Dodger. She has not come out to the back yard for the month we have had Dodger. He doesn’t pick on her, she is just terribly frightened of him. We want to be fair to our small dogs and to Dodger too. Our small dogs do not go out to the back yard any more. He has grown on us but we would give him up to the right owners with a big yard and a play mate for him.
